Did you actually need to pay?
Most drivers don’t. Petrol cars that meet Euro 4 (most from 2006), diesel cars that meet Euro 6 (most from September 2015) and electric cars drive in free. And if you stayed on the A4540 Middleway ring road without turning in, you didn’t enter the zone. Check your vehicle and the exact address on our Birmingham Clean Air Zone page.
How do I pay the Birmingham CAZ charge late?
- Go to GOV.UK’s Drive in a Clean Air Zone service.
- Enter your registration and choose Birmingham.
- Select the date(s) you drove in — you can go back up to 6 days.
- Pay by card. There’s no extra charge for paying after the day.
Missed the 6 days? What the Birmingham CAZ PCN costs
Birmingham City Council will send a penalty charge notice to the registered keeper for £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. If you think the PCN is wrong, make a representation to the council within 28 days; if it’s rejected, you can appeal to the independent Traffic Penalty Tribunal.
How do I stop it happening again?
Because Birmingham’s zone sits inside a busy ring road, it’s easy to enter by accident — one wrong exit is enough. EveryDrive alerts you the moment you cross into the zone and reminds you before day six.
