Do cars pay the Newcastle Clean Air Zone?
No. The Newcastle and Gateshead zone is Class C, so private cars drive in free.
Who pays the Newcastle Clean Air Zone?
Non-compliant vans, LGVs, taxis and private hire vehicles pay £12.50 a day. HGVs, buses and coaches pay £50. Because the zone includes the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges area, van drivers crossing between Gateshead and Newcastle often enter it without meaning to.
How do I pay the Newcastle Clean Air Zone charge?
- Use the government’s Drive in a Clean Air Zone service — it covers every Clean Air Zone in England.
- Enter the registration and choose the zone and the date(s) you drove in.
- Pay by card. You can pay up to 6 days before, on the day, or by 11:59pm on the sixth day after you drove in. You can also pay by phone on 0300 029 8888.
