What cars are ULEZ compliant?
ULEZ compliance depends on your vehicle’s Euro emissions standard, not its age as such. The standard is recorded against the vehicle when it’s type-approved, and is sometimes shown on the V5C logbook.
| Vehicle | Standard needed | Usually registered from |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol car | Euro 4 | 2006 (some from 2001) |
| Diesel car | Euro 6 | September 2015 |
| Petrol van (up to 3.5t) | Euro 4 | 2006 |
| Diesel van (up to 3.5t) | Euro 6 | September 2016 |
| Motorcycle | Euro 3 | July 2007 |
| Electric car or van | — | Always compliant |
Is a Euro 5 car ULEZ compliant?
It depends on the fuel. A Euro 5 petrol car is compliant (it exceeds the Euro 4 requirement). A Euro 5 diesel is not — diesels must be Euro 6. This catches out a lot of drivers of 2011–2015 diesels.
Are hybrid cars ULEZ compliant?
Hybrids are judged on the standard of their engine, the same as any petrol or diesel car. Most petrol hybrids are compliant.
What if the checker says my car is charged?
You’ll pay £12.50 for each day you drive in the ULEZ. If you only go into London occasionally, the risk is forgetting to pay afterwards — see how long you have to pay and what to do if you forgot to pay the ULEZ.
