Why camera-tolled crossings catch drivers out
With a booth, you can’t forget to pay. With a free-flow crossing there’s no barrier, no ticket and often no reminder — just a camera that reads your number plate. The deadlines are also much shorter than for Clean Air Zones: at Dartford, Mersey Gateway and the Tyne Tunnel you have until midnight the next day.
Which crossings are camera-tolled?
- Dartford Crossing (the Dart Charge) — A282 between Kent and Essex.
- Blackwall Tunnel and Silvertown Tunnel — under the Thames in east London, charged since April 2025.
- Mersey Gateway Bridge (Merseyflow) — between Runcorn and Widnes.
- Tyne Tunnel — between North Tyneside and South Tyneside.
- Humber Bridge — barrier-free since 2 February 2026. Pay by midnight the day after you cross, or a £25 admin fee is added. EveryDrive doesn’t detect Humber Bridge crossings yet.
How to pay each crossing
- Dartford Crossing: GOV.UK Dart Charge, or a Dart Charge account.
- Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels: TfL, the TfL Pay to Drive in London app, or TfL Auto Pay.
- Mersey Gateway: merseyflow.co.uk, or a Merseyflow account.
- Tyne Tunnel: TT2, or a Tyne Pass account.
Only pay on the operator’s own site. Look-alike sites that appear in search results can add a fee for the same payment.
Want a reminder next time? EveryDrive alerts you when you enter a charging zone or use a toll crossing and reminds you before the deadline. Join the free beta →
Crossings you still pay at a barrier
The M6 Toll is still paid at the barrier as you travel (or with a number-plate account that lifts it), so there’s normally no deadline to miss afterwards. The Severn bridges between England and Wales have been free since December 2018.
How EveryDrive helps
EveryDrive detects the crossing from your phone’s location, alerts you straight away, and reminds you before the payment deadline — so a crossing you forgot about doesn’t turn into a penalty.
